In 2003, Women in Progress
launched Global Mamas with
just six small businesses run by
women in Ghana.
Providing access to global
markets, training in
management and a vibrant
brand image, Global Mamas
today has 70 women-owned
small businesses involving nearly
400 Ghanaian women. The
businesses are creating jobs – over 200 – that bring income to thriving
communities.
Among the business owners are women like Julie Mustafa of Cape Coast, who
was selected the Global Mama of the Year in 2008. Julie has been batiking for
nine years and joined Global Mamas in 2006. A mother of three children, Julie
creates her high-quality batik cloth while her children are at school. She also
creates her own designs, which she sells at the local market. Expanding her
business – and adding more workers – is her primary goal.
Global Mamas is empowering women like Julie to be economically
independent!
