Some people see what they
believe and some people believe
what they see. What is the
reality?
Oumar Cissé insists it is belief
that counts. He has made
beaded jewelry practically all his
life. The beads have powers – if
you believe it, he says. He points
to the Fulani wedding bead,
presented to Fulani women on
the day they are married.
"Each one has a lot of color," he says. "One week after the wedding, they give
these to the woman. One day you are happy, one day you are not happy. When
you are not happy, you look at the beads and the color will make you happy."
The beads are talking to people and help people, Cissé says. His company,
Farafina Tigne means 'African Reality'. "The reality is, a long time ago the beads
were used as money, cowrie shells," he says. "All the jewelry we make with the
beads means something. Every day I get a new bead, I get a new idea because
every bead has a story."
