Farmers in Northern Ghana
have hand-woven baskets for
generations for everyday use.
Their pastime has become a
source of income, supporting
their families and
communities.
"The straw they use is very
common in Ghana, but it is a
special reed," explains Mawuli
Akpenyo, general manager of Delata Ghana Ltd."
They pull it out, cut off the owers and dry it. They store it, split it, twist it and
dye it. It's very strong, very tensile."
Akpenyo knew of the baskets as a young man just as any young American
today might know a quality local restaurant and its menu's specialties. When he
was in Germany as part of a trade and export training program, a company
there expressed its admiration for the baskets – and wanted to buy more, lots
more. "I went back to Ghana and worked with the basket weavers," Akpenyo
recalls. "We arranged the first big shipment of the baskets, over 3,000."
